My colleague just brought me a can of silkworm pupae that she bought from the Korean market down the street. WTF?!

I am humbled and honored that I inspire people to such heights. But DAMN, those things look gross.

The first time I ever had Korean food, I was pretty sure it was the inspiration for Klingon food in Star Trek.

haha! my mom brought some dried squid to a party once and said that it was GAK (sic), albeit the not-as-good cooked kind vs the "best" living stuff! hehe

I'd try to be coy and all, but that would be lying. The truth is:

FUCK NO.

I really don't think I'm tough enough to face the pupae. *gak*

This is a popular street food in Korea, apprently. There were stands selling the stuff in the evening on just about every street in seoul. It smells like an open grave when you walk past it, and frankly I never got drunk enough to be tempted by that particular item. (Squid jerky, however, I was all over. Go figure.)

Squid jerky sounds pretty good, actually. I watched Doug totally DESTROY dried cuttlefish the other day. He loves that shit.

No grubs or worms, though. Thanks.

Squid jerky also sent my two cats into a frenzy of salivating feline madness. They literally tried to snatch the jerky from my mouth while I was eating it. :p

you so need to see inside the cupboard outside my office: it's full of varying sized glass jars full of larvae, insects, arachnids, and.... THE Most Venomous Centipede known to man (I know this, because I had an argument with my ento office buddy about centipedes last month and she got it out to show me).

Date: 2008-04-07 09:16 pm (UTC)

you mean THE....Most Venomous Centipede? ;-)

Absolutely!

We've got a big jar of cockies in the back room. Their tank is inside a tray of sticky gum stuff, so as they'll get stuck in it if they break out. Deep down I doubt that a tray of sticky gum will defeat them. I'd quite like to see it though.

I thought I didn't mind spiders until I noticed that the whopping great tarantula had escaped a while back. That was a real OMFG! IT'S MOVING! DON'T LET IT GET UNDER THERE! NOOOOO! YOU GET IT! ARRRRRGH! moment. Hopefully not to be repeated.

propionic acid, hydrogen sulfide, butyric acid, and acetic acid.

mmm, my favourite. no wait, i already saved that spot for semi-digested tapeworm proglottids that have sat around in saline for a few weeks. even i had evacuate the lab after that one. now i know the true meaning of the word 'ROTTEN'.

but i'm sure this comes close. anything that has to be opened under water is probably not good for you.

Growing up in South-Central Wisconsin, I know of people who ate lutefisk. But this is also much like the description I read about the forbearer to sushi.

Ah yes! Witchetty grubs!

I'd opt for your cupcakes any day (and twice on sunday). Your post totally made me want to make cupcakes of my own.

Well we do have witchetty grubs... but they're certainly not eaten large enough numbers to be commercially tinned. They're generally the stuff of travel show and breakfast television stunts - where some hapless television host meets the local aboriginal people and they make him/eat them and then as soon as the television cameras cut they all go and have a pie.

Ha ha ha ha!

That is wrong on so many damn levels.

And I understand that marriage requires the good with the bad. But there is no way in hell that things will get bad enough that either of us are forced to eat that.

And I was annoyed that someone already brought up the Klingon food reference. Damn. :-)
