Why I Love Summer 2: More Food Porn

Today I did not purchase any tomatoes. We still have 4 left over from last weekend, and we have to eat them this weekend or it's to the bin for them. Instead I spent my time (and money) at three of my favorite stalls: the Crazy Moustache Guy, The Beekeeper (Covered in bees!), and a new stall run by a family of Mexican farmers and who carry really odd vegetables. I took my tomato money and instead bought flowers.

From left to right. Top row: a rue plant; millet flowers; unnamed flower that I suspect is a kind of amaranth.
Second row: fresh sourdough baguette; cilantro; turnips (can't remember which variety)
Third row: fresh garlic; papalo; purple amaranth (callaloo); flat-leaf parsley
Bottom row: string of hot peppers; peppermint-honey soap; creamed honey with cinnamon

A closer look at the papalo. This is a Mexican herb that is used frequently on sandwiches, in salads and in salsas. It is an acquired taste, as I've read online (I'm a sucker for buying anything and everything I've never eaten or heard of before, then trying to figure out WTF to do with it.) I'll be using this with our need-to-be-eaten tomatoes tonight. The purple amaranth (callalloo) that you see to the right is an amazing green if you can get your hands on it. It's not bitter, but it's not wimpy like spinach. Cooks in a saute pan easily. The turnip greens will end up in the saute pan as well.

Closer look at the millet, amaranth (?) and turnips

These chiles make me very happy. So vibrant!

crappy picture of the rue. I hope to make bitters with this. If I don't kill this plant like I did the last one. Should never be used by women who think they may be pregnant (and wish to remain so).

closer look at the cilantro (upper left), papalo, purple amaranth, turnips (top) and flat-leaf parsley. You can just see the soap in the lower right in the baggie.
