Put Them In the Iron Maiden

Just felt the need to comment on what a great album Iron Maiden's Powerslave is. The "Two Minutes to Midnight"/"Rime of the Ancient Mariner" double-threat is a force just impossible to resist.

Spooky coincidence. I was listening to that very album today. It's a belter all right.

The live versions of those tracks on 'Live After Death' are also cool. Bruce Dickinson has a hell of a voice. And is all around cool... airline pilot, fencer, and heavy metal god. Whattaguy.

Also, looks like you.

But very weird coincidence, dude. You spying on me?

[identity profile] the-corbie.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Looks like me? Hmm... that's a new one.

And I wasn't spying, just um... doing research for my Martha webpage. :p

"Excellent!"
"Execute them."
"Bogus!"

Last night I watched a DVD of Dio performing the entirety of the Holy Diver album in London last year. Dio has lost absolutely nothing.

Damn, I should try to find that. I'm all into my Gods of Metal phase.

Still got it, eh? Somewhere I have a video of him performing with Rainbow.

Scarily, he's the same age as my Dad would be (were he alive). Has he any hair left, or is he now a bald leprechaun?

Also, I decided I needed a metal avatar. And how much more metal can you get than this?

He still has most of his hair! And he looks just like he did in the 80s!

Proof of his magical leprechaun nature, if any were needed.

I'm a "Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" fan, myself. Or Somewhere in Time.

I don't know that I still own any Iron Maiden albums, though. Bummer.

Eddie sez you must rectify this NOW!

Steve Harris is one of my heroes.

Steve Harris

[identity profile] weaklingrecords.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Which, by default, makes him one of my heros. Since [livejournal.com profile] bassmike is probably the 2nd or 3rd greatest bass player I've ever heard.

[identity profile] misunderstruck.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm....so Mike is ranked lower on your list than mine. Interesting.

[identity profile] weaklingrecords.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Is [livejournal.com profile] bassmike #1 on your list?

I mean, he's pretty damn good. And he's changed the way that I think about the bass as an instrument, so there's a compelling argument that he should be at the top of the list.

I definitely think he's a better bass player than say, Stefan Lessard from DMB, or Sting, or Paul McCartney. The floating between #1, #2, and #3 were [livejournal.com profile] bassmike, Mike Gordon from Phish (and this is possibly a sentimental attachment to my experiences with Phish on the whole rather than a critical examination of Gordon's playing, and then that one dude from Rush who is pretty badass.

[identity profile] misunderstruck.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
My lists are really of my favorites. Mike is my favorite bass player. Both as a person and as a musician.

Perhaps not the most scientifically reasoned statement I've ever made, but there it is. Most of my decisions about music tend to be based more on sentimental and emotional reasoning than logical reasoning.

[identity profile] the-corbie.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
This is the dude, Geddy Lee. And he is pretty badass. :)

[identity profile] weaklingrecords.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Word.

Also, I was going to leave this in your journal, but then wondered if I get the dreaded "fark off, spammer!" flame:

[identity profile] the-corbie.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahahaha!!!Quality. :)

And you're OK, you're not a complete stranger, after all. And I wouldn't flame any friend of Martha and Doug. ;)

[identity profile] xraytheenforcer.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
bwahahaha nice.

[identity profile] xraytheenforcer.livejournal.com 2007-03-08 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I can't let a discussion of bassists go by without mentioning Les Claypool. Dear gods almighty, that man could play!!!

Also, I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Neds Atomic Dustbin, the only band that I know of that had TWO bass players.

[identity profile] misunderstruck.livejournal.com 2007-03-08 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Dianogah also had two bass players. And a drummer. And no guitarist.

[identity profile] xraytheenforcer.livejournal.com 2007-03-08 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
d'oh! forgot about them. :)

[identity profile] the-corbie.livejournal.com 2007-03-08 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
My flatmate in first year at uni was into NAD. I must go and acquire some, for the nostalgia alone...

[identity profile] pippingeek.livejournal.com 2007-03-08 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
i still adore NAD, to the point where i paid itunes for their album, even tho itunes doesn't offer the 2 best songs on it! even so, i'm thrilled with the purchase, it's made me immensely happy
