I'm not sure what to say about this image, other than I find it thought-provoking, and therefore I don't think I'll say anything at all. Instead, just the caption information that came with the photo.

Covered by a shirt, the body of Claudia Mora sits on a chair where she was murdered at a race circuit on the outskirts of Ciudad Juarez, northern Mexico, late Sunday, April 11, 2010. Police found later a message written on a wall in downtown Ciudad Juarez, allegedly from the Juarez drug cartel, claiming responsibility for the murder. (AP Photo/Guillermo Arias)

Wait, why did the cartel kill her? I mean, wanton killing from drug cartels is not surprising, but claiming responsibility for it seems new to me. What point were they trying to make?

As far as I understand it (from reading other sources), these were two rival gangs associated with two different drug cartels operating in Ciudad Juarez. I'm guess the error probably comes from a slightly dubious translation.

Ah, okay, so this is the killing of someone from a rival cartel. That makes more sense (well, not on the killing part, but at least on the desire to claim responsibility publicly).

But yeah, human lives are cheap when the world is ruled by thugs whose claim to power is that they are less morally constrained than the next guy.

I was wondering about the claiming responsibility part as well, but that makes sense...

Besides, the picture of her just sitting there is disturbing... =/

Yeah, for me it's her, slumped in the same kind of plastic lawn chair that everybody has in their backyards around here, surrounded by empty plastic beer cups, and the concave chair leg being the perfect conduit of her lifeblood from her body to the dry ground. It really conveys the idea that "everyone dies alone."

If anything, your description is even sadder than the actual picture.

Fuck.

I know we probably discussed this before, but I really cannot understand how people with a conscious are fine with supporting the drug business :/

Yeah, it's easy to ignore complicity in the violence when one is so removed for the bullet-ridden reality of the drug trade. Which is one of the reasons why I'd like the marijuana business in the US to be legalized and taxed -- it's a very rare thing indeed that two beer producers would shoot each other these days.

To be honest though: It is only very recently that I actually began considering where these drugs came from and made up my opinion on this (- this with the general rising awareness of where things I use come from and how my use of them effects the world) I guess it is easily to forget, for many people, just as many people have no reservations about eating factory produced meat or giving little consideration to their habits as consumers and excessive waste...but still: It is shocking how little reservation there seems to be even among more considerate individuals in the area of drug consumption.

Absolutely. In this country especially, it seems that most people really do not consider where anything they consume comes from (food, clothing, medicine, etc. etc. etc). I've been guilty of it myself, of course, but I really do find this disconnect disturbing when I think about it.

My aunt has plastic chairs like these in her garden. :-(

This is such an awful picture. They just... left her, among the trash, like she didn't matter, like she was just some rubbish left over from a party too. I guess people are that, to them.

This is far creepier than any "Unsafe For Work" picture could have been. Sometimes the less you see...

It looks to me as if she died while in a circle of friends, having a good time. The chair in front of her--was she giving someone a back rub, braiding a friend's hair? Once the police arrived to put up the tape, all anyone could do for her was to stand back and let them gather evidence (although I don't delude myself that she's getting the CSI treatment.)

The chair leg brings to mind the fuller of a sword.

Was she killed because of what she did or who she was?

Yeah, that was particularly disturbing :-(

Just speechless, want to turn away but can't.

Spent lots of my youth sitting in that kind of chair staring at the stars and laughing about stupid stuff. There's a photo of me from high school where I'm sitting in a similar pose, but I having my "I need to get away from people" time.
