As my friend Patrick said after the show: "Fuck, that was brutal."
The long-anticipated Meshuggah show  was last night. They played my favorite song (from my top album of 2008, obZen), linked below. Unfortunately, one of the reasons I wanted to see them live is to figure out how the fuck they actually play this song, but I was too busy making sure I survived the concert to see much in the way of technique. The sold-out show probably had 800 people there, no more than about 80 of which were women. And the bassist has a habit of wandering the audience during songs, making every spot on the floor a potential mosh pit.

This song just kills me every time I hear it -- it starts out teeth-gritting intense and you think "naw, there's no way they can make this any heavier than with that very first riff"...and then in the last 2 minutes of the song, it draws in and then unfolds into a fucking hypernova.

I can't wait to see 'em again, but next time I'll make sure I'm nowhere near the pit.

Note to [livejournal.com profile] litechick  -- totally thought of you last night watching the whole lighting array. :)

*grumble* Kids these days...*grumble* GET OFF MY LAWN! :D

(I am sure that when you're 35, you'll still be going to metal shows, too. Once it's in your blood, it never really leaves.)

Ha, I was at the club working on the light board, trying to bend it to my will.

I have fallen into a terrible habit of not going to shows that I am not working on and that has to change.

I'm glad you had a good time. I also have decided vis a vis the Pit that I have been there, done that and there's really no need to continue doing it. There's really only so many Doc Martens you can take to the head before it loses its charm. :)

Ha. I didn't even intend to be anywhere near the pit -- it came to me. Basically, after Cynic was finished, I wended my way forward to near the mixing board, but as soon as Meshuggah took the stage, I knew I was fucked, so I ran back about 15 feet. While it was OK for some of the show, for the heavy-hitter tracks (Bleed, Combustion, Future Breed Machine, Rational Gaze, etc), there were times when the entire floor went apeshit.

:p

Actually, I bet those guitars are pretty heavy. Huge necks (8-strings) on 'em.

In other words... death by guitar.
