xraytheenforcer: (facepalm)
Jesus wept. As I was dressing, post-workout, the most teeth-grindingly awful remix came over the sound system. I knew the words right from the start:

Water was running; children were running
You were running out of time

But it took me the next two lines to fully place the song:

Under the mountain, a golden fountain
Were you praying at the Lares shrine?

I was confused because these words were sung by someone who sounded like she was 12, at most. And the backing track would have been a really fucking HOT ITEM on Ibiza in, oh, 1997 or so. DIRE. Fucking DIRE. Nuke somebody from orbit bad.

In case y'all are wondering, this song is Cities in Dust by Siouxsie and the Banshees, and it describes the destruction (and eventual archeological excavation) of Pompeii. Despite the original's 4/4 beat, Siouxsie and her bandmates craft an ominous, threatening atmosphere and narrative of a world and a people coming to a searing, bitter end.

Not so this fucking remix. Not only is the music braindead and soulless, but the unforgivable singer could not enunciate properly. Instead of threat, she produced the techno version of ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US by singing "Oh your city lie in dust" during the chorus. I don't even want to know which country was responsible for this travesty, because I will feel compelled to retaliate.

Here's the original. I must scrub that other monstrosity from my mind.
