New Leaf, and fetish
Jun. 6th, 2008 07:32 amI am going to put this behind an LJ cut, because I know that some are sensitive to discussing weight and body issues. Latex fashion will also be discussed.

So, I said something in yesterday's post (some of y'all didn't see that because I put it under the meme filter) that got me thinking about my perception of myself and how it has changed over the last 5 years. Here's the sentence:
Turns out that I just really like latex clothing (but sadly I don't have the figure to pull it off anymore).
It was an off-the-cuff quip, fueled partly by my inability to get used to a 34-year-old body and the various changes that happen when one reaches their mid-30s (fuck you, gravity), and partly residual feelings from when I was carrying at least 10 more pounds on me (I am slimmer now than I was at LACon or in Scotland, for example. Also, much healthier). But when I actually sat down to think about it -- and I reflected about how I, honest-to-gawd, looked good in that rather unforgiving blue dress I wore for the reception this weekend -- I realized that my "no body for latex" was such a load of horseshit, propped up by some reflexive "OMG fat" circuit that had been shoved into my brain.
Without getting into a big ol' rant about society and their dumb-ass beauty ideals -- we all know that drill -- I'm just gonna say that I came to the realization that, contrary to the OMG fat circuit, I am totally built for latex clothing. Of all the fashion trends that we've embraced, there are two distinct areas in which a woman with a small waist, and rather larger tits and an ass, can flourish. One is the 1950s, when small waists and a full skirt were de rigeur. The other is fetish clothing. You have to have an exaggerated figure in order to pull most of those looks off (or you can buy a corset to help things along). So why I had it in my head that I didn't have a body for latex, I can only surmise that somehow, society is Getting To Me. Fuck that.
I am in love with Savage-Wear and a couple of other designers. They go beyond the standard catsuit and create some really interesting pieces. I wish I had the disposable income to get more custom-made latex (I had to ditch everything when I gained weight).
Shit. I have to go to work, and just when I was going to start in on what I do and don't like about latex. Damn.
Anyway, I like the look and always have. Anyone else out there, or am I alone, all alone?
Pictures, because a post about fetish wear is totally useless (and joyless) without them:

Date: 2008-06-06 01:11 pm (UTC)Perhaps I might have a body for latex from the arse up then. In fact, I'm generally okay with my body from the arse up. Feeling slightly too wobbly in a post exam (& sedentary-chocolate-gorging-revision mode) kind of way atm, but hopefully a controlled diet will resolve that in the not-too-distant future.
Is it not unbearably hot in there though? My chest kicks out untold amounts of heat even in natural fibres.

Date: 2008-06-06 01:39 pm (UTC)Latex does get hot, but it also conducts heat well (it's a real bitch trying to get home in the middle of winter wearing it -- instafreeze) so you don't get unbearably hot. It does pay to drink a lot of water, though, because you will sweat.
The one good thing about latex (and fetish gear in general) is that it de-emphasizes thighs. People are too busy staring at everything else, so they don't notice if you're less than perfect in that one area. Ha.

Date: 2008-06-06 02:50 pm (UTC)This post reminds me that I have a hand-made emerald green corset that I haven't worn in at least five years. I really must find an occasion for getting it out of mothballs...

Date: 2008-06-06 02:59 pm (UTC)You should totally get some leather trousers with studs for your next concert. Now that's hawt!

Date: 2008-06-06 03:09 pm (UTC)The black dress is just amazing. No clue how one could walk in that, or breathe, prbably, but it's amazing. And hawt.

Date: 2008-06-06 03:39 pm (UTC)I think you would look great in latex.

Date: 2008-06-06 04:11 pm (UTC)I need to remember that next time I try wearing a corset. Certain clothing requires a certain attitude ;)
Otherwise: Thank you. *blush*. I am now tempted to prove you either wrong or right. 'tis probably a good thing that I lack the required clothing.

Date: 2008-06-06 04:05 pm (UTC)While I have no pictures to offer as evidence, as an eyewitness, I can verify that Martha looked awesome in the blue dress last weekend.

Date: 2008-06-06 04:24 pm (UTC)I really like the first pic after the cut, except the mermaid-esque bottom. I actually think I could rock the top half, but not so much the fish skirt, lol.

Date: 2008-06-06 05:19 pm (UTC)If I have to be able to do fancy things like WALK, I'd have to stick to something simpler, like this one:

Date: 2008-06-06 05:09 pm (UTC)Even better, that designer (savage-wear) is from Berlin. :)
You should totally at least try some on. It's really quite an experience. :)

Date: 2008-06-06 05:33 pm (UTC)Though I should take this post as a call to action regarding my fear of unique clothes and delve a bit further into the 1950s (where my top half that has retained 'hourglass' can bluff it for the bottom half with added time).

Date: 2008-06-07 01:23 pm (UTC)well-made ones are insanely expensive. then again, they are a specialty item and handmade, which totally explains (and justifies) the price.
Is leather a no-go? Because Stormy Leather in the past has made some really fabulous corsets, and they're not exorbitantly priced...

Date: 2008-06-07 11:33 pm (UTC)I'm guessing you probably walked into an Agent Provocateur shop, or a local designer. If it is the former, don't waste your money. If it was the latter, then a good grilling would be in order to determine if this is just for fashion, or if the designer understands the scene. :)
