Made good use of the farmers market windfall today, and fixed up some Canary Bean Stew with, yes canary beans (which start out a lovely yellow color and then cook to a very standard "northern bean" color. Bah! Worse, I don't think these were produced by canaries.)

So, yeah. Used the smoked ham steak, onion, tomato, garlic, bay leaf and habanero pepper to make a stew with the beans (do all the normal things you would with those ingredients to make a stew -- you don't need stock, either. Just water). Be sure to season the stew heavily, because the beans are more buttery/bland, and so you need the rest to stand up and Be The Backbone.

I also confit'd the shit outta some tomatoes. Olive oil, garlic, de-seeded tomato wedges, fresh thyme...bake for 2+ hours at 200F. Spread on bread....*drool*

Tomorrow I'll make the asparagus to go with the stew leftovers.

Doug, for his part, made red velvet cupcakes. He took pictures, so I'm sure he'll be posting imagery soon enough.

False advertising! There ought to be a law.

I know! I was sorely disappointed. They did taste good, though.

It would be more worrying if they *were* produced by canaries and were brown. Count your blessings.
