To my very great chagrin and disappointment, there does not seem to be a single Mongolian BBQ joint in the 5 boroughs of NYC. DOOOM.

(of course, now that I can't have it, it's the only thing that I want to eat.)

Unfortunate for you, Flat Top Grill does not seem to have penetrated the NYC market.

Would shabu-shabu be close enough? There seem to be a few of those around....

Mmm. Shabu-shabu. I haven't had that since I lived in Japan. I wants it, my precious. I needs it.

Alas, no. Shabu-shabu, while incredibly tasty, it just not gonna satisfy my cravings for meat and vegetables fried on a giant convex griddle. *cries*

Not that this helps you now, but isn't there Mongolian BBQ available in Boston? I'm thinking of the place we were all going to eat at once, because it was called Fire & Ice...not sure if it was Mongolian...

Never mind, that place gets terrible reviews anyway. *removes from list of places to try during Boskone visit*

Although my quick search revealed that Mongolian BBQ is indeed very hard to find. The closest I can find in Boston is a Chinese place with a Mongolian fire pot.

Fire & Ice is ok. It's sort of Mongolian BBQ, but all glitzed up with too many choices and fancy-schmancy ingredients. Imagine Mongolian BBQ as done by your average Harvard Square restauranteur.

And be not the slightest bit surprised when you find out Fire & Ice is in Harvard Square. (Or I think it is. It may be in Quincy Market, which amounts to much the same thing.)

I know. No decent cheesesteaks, and no randomly complicated stir fry. WHY HAS GOD FORSAKEN ME?!

God is doing you a favor. The last time I ate at our local Mongolian barbecue (and there are at least 5 in Pasadena), I got horrible food poisoning. I tell you I have to avert my eyes when passing that place now.

Okay, yet more culinary ignorance on my part.

What is MONGOLIAN BBQ as opposed to any other type?

I see it's neither mongolian nor bbq. That explains a lot.
